Times are Tuff, Economically.

Recently we've been buying some of our weekly groceries down at the Barrie Farmer's Market (yes, the website is that awesome). To be even more accurate I'd say that recently we've been buying groceries weekly, instead of just when the cupboard is bare.

This practice seems to be having a variety of benefits. We are spending less money on groceries, we don't have to buy as much, it doesn't take as long to shop, and we get to chat with nice people at the market instead of pushing past people to get to the discount pizza pops at the grocery store.

Whenever I tell someone (family, friends, strangers) about the market, they always ask if it's cheaper. To be honest I'd say that most items are generally a tad more expensive than at a grocery store (like a dozen eggs, for example) but the items, in my opinion, are better. It's weird that people then assume that we're buying "fancy pants" organic food and they want to prove to us that "it's no different than any other meat or vegetables, you know."

Actually, it is different but I generally don't get in to all that. I really don't care too much about certified organic. I just like the idea that we can easily and conveniently buy locally grown and/or manufactured products. Switching a few key items from regular grocery rotation to market purchases seems like the sensible thing to do. We buy eggs, perogies, meat pies, roast, cabbage rolls, bread and soap at the market. In the summer we might get involved in a local vegetable basket co-op, run through many of the nearby farms.

I was wondering if anyone out there is also buying locally, or thinking about it. Where are you? Do you have a market? Is it centrally located? Or do you grow some of your own food? I'm hoping to start a garden this summer. We'll see if I have a green thumb or not.

You know our awesome plans to balcony garden this summer? Just got a notice that our building is redoing the balconies all summer long. Woh woh woh.

Maybe I'll skulk down to Barrie and steal your tomatoes.

That sucks, what are they doing to the balconies? Making them more awesome for gardening? W00t!

You can come and have tomatoes anytime you like, provided I actually get my ass in gear and start a garden.

They are using noise level light chipping hammers and removing concrete. Then replacing concrete. It is expected there will be a significant level of noise, vibration, and dust. But afterward apparently we will have new weeping tiles. I imagine I will also have dust flavoured bread and cookies for several months.

Honestly, I don't know what they are thinking taking on such a project in this economic climate.

Will you grow plants for ur dawg? If they are like cats, they like that sort of thing. It is good for their tummy and pooper.

Definitely. We're lucky to be close to the Kitchener Farmers Market, St. Jacobs's Market and Guelph Farmer's Market that buying local is good. Unfortunately, we get lazy about buying it on a regular basis outside of the summer months. This is something we've got to correct!
