Quotes from "Generation Me" Critical Responses

"We think of our future careers more as a path toward self-fulfillment than as a means to a secure livelihood. We feel we can have it all and believe in following our dreams and doing things our own way. We regard social rules and figures of authority only as long as they don't get in our way. And we view our twenties as a period to bounce around and "find ourselves" because otherwise we won't be prepared for married family life in our late twenties and early thirties."

"Also, there was a time during my first semester math class of grade nine when the class received a test back. Another girl in my class, sitting near by burst into tears about the poor grade she had obtained. The class, including the teacher, stood spellbound at the unexpected outburst. I myself wonder now if telling her, 'It is alright you are special,' would have helped."

"I can also see our schools becoming more lenient on the work given. We get less homework (which I like) but some work I see handed in to teachers is horrible, and thinking they will get a horrible mark with it [sic]. But some how the teachers give them a 70% or 80% because of comments like 'good thinking' or 'had the right idea.'"

Who the fuck has dreams?

I dream of a job that lets me "find my rent".

The second one is far superior for its earnestness as opposed to the (somehow?) jaded optimism of the former.

So, was the first guy/girl condoning the path of dreams or poking fun at the dreamers?

I agree if it's a poke, and I blame Hollywood.

I think the second one has far more false optimism, Greg - that kid was lying. He so wanted to tell that girl to suck it up or he'll give her "something to cry about".

I want to teach. Sherry, get me a teaching job in Barrie and we can be neighbours and drive into ditches every Sunday!

She was poking fun/pointing out the irony.

The second person was recounting a story that actually happened and she was being facetious about the last part "if you are special"....

I would get you a job if I could, but I've got no pull. I do like the idea of driving into snowbanks. In the summer we can drive into the lake.
